How to Reface a Dresser

Refacing is a good option to consider when you want a new bedroom dresser but can't afford to go out and buy one. Applying a new wood veneer to your old dresser can take a little time but can be a cost-effective way to give your piece of furniture an entirely different look.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the trim and knobs from the dresser drawers. Also remove any nails that might be holding the trim in place.

    • 2

Take the old veneer off using a jointer. Plane the veneer off so the front of the drawers are smooth.

    • 3

Cut a piece of the new veneer so that it is just larger than the drawer you are covering.

    • 4

Spread glue on the front of the drawer. Use a paint scraper to get it smooth and thin.

    • 5

Put glue on the back of the veneer, as well. Make sure that this is smooth. You do not want glue bubbles showing through.

    • 6

Lay the veneer with the glue side up, and place the drawer on top. Get it in place quickly, before the glue becomes too sticky.

    • 7

Secure the front of the drawer with several clamps. Apply pressure evenly.

    • 8

Trim the veneer around the front of the drawer once the glue is completely dry. Always trim toward the drawer, not away. This will minimize any chipping.

    • 9

      Repeat with remaining drawers.

    • 10

Reuse the old holes if possible for any new drawer pulls. If the spacing is different, simply screw in the new pulls as directed on the packaging. You may have to use a drill to get new holes started, but that is OK. The veneer should hold up.

    • 11

Remove the old veneer from the body of the dresser in the same manner as with the drawers. You may need some help if you intend to pick up the dresser.

    • 12

Apply the glue and veneer to the rest of the dresser as you did with the drawers.
