How to Make a Waterfall Table

The sleek design of a waterfall table comes from its smooth curves. A waterfall table is a table made entirely from one sheet of Plexiglas. The support comes from two curved “legs” on either side of the tabletop. In order to make your own waterfall table you need to know how to bend Plexiglas. Normally, you can achieve a gentle bend in Plexiglas by heating it in an oven and allowing it to droop over a molded form. However, this is not possible due to the size of this piece. Instead, you will need to use an iron to spot heat the Plexiglas along its two seams.

Things You'll Need

  • 3 x 8 1/4 foot thick Plexiglas sheet
  • Dry erase marker
  • Ruler
  • Felt
  • Heat gun
  • Jig
  • Clamps
  • Respirator

Instructions

    • 1

Lay down a layer of felt on top of your work surface. Choose a work surface that is heat tolerant, such as concrete or metal. Lay the Plexiglas sheet on top of the felt. If your Plexiglas has a sheet of masking on it, remove it.

    • 2

Measure 2 feet in along the 8 foot axis and make a mark here with a dry erase marker. Then measure 6 feet in and make another mark. Use these marks and a ruler to draw a pair of straight lines across the 3 foot axis of the Plexiglas. You should now have a pair of 2 foot sections on either side of a 4 foot section.

    • 3

Plug in your heat gun. Point it at one of the lines and turn it on. Sweep it slowly across the line in a series of tight circles. You don’t just want to heat the line. For a gentle curve, you want to heat the area around the line, as well.

    • 4

Lift up on the edge of the Plexiglas as you heat along the line to test its flexibility. You will likely feel some resistance from the other side of the sheet where the heat has not penetrated. In this case, flip the sheet over and apply the heat gun along the line on the other side, as well.

    • 5

Flip the sheet over again and continue to apply heat. Keep testing the edge for resistance. Eventually you will be able to bend the plastic up at a right angle. Bend the plastic slowly so you don’t stress it and achieve a more gentle curve.

    • 6

Slide a jig under the bent plastic and clamp the sheet to the jig. This will let you keep the table leg at a 90 degree angle from the tabletop as the plastic cools.

Repeat this process along the other line to create a second table leg. Leave the table to cool for three hours, just to be safe, before you remove the clamps.
