How to Cover a Loveseat

Covering a loveseat or couch in your home will help give your room a new look without incurring costs for new furniture. The quickest and most affordable method of covering furniture is to purchase a pre-made slip cover. There are several different companies that manufacture slip covers and some are made to stretch to ensure a tight and more permanent-looking solution. You can find slip covers in almost any fabric, including leather. Some popular websites to purchase slip covers are Sure Fit, Stretch and Cover and Slip Cover Shop.

Using your tape measure, determine the width of the front portion of your loveseat starting from the inside of one arm and spading to the inside of the other. Next measure the circumference of your loveseat (totaling the width of each side). You may also need to measure your loveseat's height and the back width. Where you decide to purchase your slip cover will determine what exact measurements you'll need to make. Deffer to the slip cover manufacturer's website for complete measurement instructions.

Determine what color and fabric you would like to use to cover your loveseat. You will also have to decide what style of slip cover you would like to purchase. The most popular styles of slip covers to choose from include square cushion, T-cushion, ruffled, straight and stretchable.

According to Home Furnish, square cushion slipcovers are for use on couches, loveseats or chairs that have square of box shaped cushions. T-cushion slipcovers are for use on couches, loveseats, or chairs that have T-shaped cushions. Ruffled slipcovers have elastic sewn throughout the back of the cover that gives the cover added support. Straight slipcovers have a skirted front and tie at the corner of your couch or loveseat. Stretchable slipcovers are designed to fit your furniture tightly. This slipcover is very versicle because it can fit almost any style couch, loveseat or chair. Some stretchable slipcovers come with wooden anchors that can be placed into the corners of your furniture to ensure the cover's placement is not disrupted.

Installation will be slightly different depending on what type of cover you purchase, but generally you begin by draping the cover over the entire loveseat making sure the arms and sides of the furniture fit into the slip cover. After you have placed the cover over top of your loveseat, tuck the cover into the crevices of your loveseat making sure any excess fabric is hidden away.

If your slip cover included wooden anchor points, first insert the anchors into the designated anchor pouches of your slip cover. Your cover's installation instructions should give you details on where these pouches can be found. Then drape your slipcover over the top of your loveseat making sure it is correctly placed, and tuck the anchor points into the crevices of your couch or loveseat. Tuck in the excess fabric into the crevices of your loveseat and enjoy your furniture's new look.
