Directions for a Mosaic Table Top

The art of mosaics has existed since the fourth century B.C. During this time wealthy citizens of ancient Greece covered their floors with ornate patterns made of pebbles and stones of many different colors. Originally these elaborate designs mimicked carpet and other decorative tapestries. Today mosaic art is an ideal way to turn boring surfaces into beautiful works of art. Transform your tabletop into a mosaic master piece with this project.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a hard and flat surface to complete your mosaic project, such as a work bench or table. Cover the area with newspaper to avoid damaging the surface.

    • 2

Prepare your materials. Determine what size pieces you want to use on your mosaic table top. Break the tile pieces, glass pieces or broken dishes into the appropriate size piece for your project. Wrap each tile individually in your old towel. Hit the towel firmly with your hammer to break up the materials. Check periodically to ensure the pieces are the right size. Pieces should be approximately the same thickness to create a flat surface when applied.

    • 3

Figure out a design for your mosaic table top. Lay out the pieces you have created to determine what your ultimate design will be. Move the pieces around to create variations in color, shape and pattern.

    • 4

Glue the pieces down onto the table top. Working in sections, carefully remove a section of the tile. Use your paintbrush to apply the clear glass glue to the section. Place the piece back in the desired location. Press the pieces firmly into place. Continue this process until you have glued all of the pieces. Allow the glue to fully dry before moving on.

    • 5

Fill in the gaps between pieces. Apply your pre-mixed sanded grout to the the table top. Use your putty knife to apply the grout to the entire surface of the table, making sure that you have filled in all of the grooves. Allow the grout to dry for 20 minuets before moving on. The grout should cause a gray-colored film to cover the surface of the table.

    • 6

Clean the table top. Dip your sponge in water and squeeze out the excess water until your sponge is only slightly damp. Firmly wipe off the surface of the table. Rinse your sponge frequently to clean your sponge. Continue this process until you have removed all of the grout from the pieces you have applied, leaving only the grout in the cracks. Allow the table to dry for at least 72 hours before moving on to the next step.

    • 7

Repeat the cleaning process to remove any grout that was not removed from the pieces the first time.

    • 8

Seal your mosaic table top. Use your paintbrush to apply a thin coat of tile and grout sealer to the entire surface.
