How to Make a Wood Toy Chest

It’s not too hard to make a great wood toy box for your kids. Make it a family project, letting the kids help by decorating the box any way they like. You can use plywood or cut down on some of the work by using melamine board, which has a durable and washable surface applied over the wood. Using melamine board will mean no sanding, no painting and no edges to finish.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the board into the pieces you will need. Cut 4 pieces that are 36 inches by 18 inches and 2 ends that are 18 inches by 18 inches. Plan the cuts on paper first and then draw them onto the wood with a pencil, so you don’t waste wood. Large home improvement stores will often cut the pieces to your specifications. If you use plywood, sand all the pieces.

    • 2

Lay the bottom piece flat on the work surface and attach two corner braces on each long side and one corner brace on each end. The end corner braces should be centered in the middle of the end length. The corner braces on the longer sides should be centered between the halfway point and each end.

    • 3

Attach one corner brace a few inches from each end of the front and back pieces.

    • 4

Attach the long sides to the bottom and then add the end pieces.

    • 5

Screw the hinges onto the toy box lid, and attach to the back piece. There are several types of safety support hinges so follow the package directions carefully to be sure your safety support hinges really prevent slammed fingers.

    • 6

Glue one inch high rubber or plastic feet on the bottom edge of the lid at each corner to add more protection against slammed fingers.

    • 7
Let the children decorate the toy box.

Give your children the kids’ paints, crayons, stickers and glitter and let them decorate the toy box on all sides and the top, any way they like. Allow time for their artwork to dry.

      Seal the box with polyurethane.

Paint over the children’s artwork with a coat or two of polyurethane to seal it.

    • 9

Screw handles on the sides and locking casters on the bottom, optionally, for better maneuverability.
