How to Create Picture Frames

The history of picture frames is a long one, dating back to more than 4,000 years ago. A picture frame is often every bit as important as the picture itself. Although there are a multitude of picture frames available in a variety of sizes and designs, it may be more rewarding to build a picture frame yourself. With a bit of knowledge, the proper tools, and a creative mind; you can create your own custom-made picture frame.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the picture or document you want to frame.

    • 2

Mark your molding with the measurements lightly with a pencil.

    • 3

Cut your molding about 4 inches from the measurements penciled on the molding.

    • 4

Starting from the pencil mark you made, cut at a 45-degree angle, cutting from the bottom to the top toward the left side of the molding and then toward the right side of the right end of the molding. Repeat with all four pieces of molding.

    • 5

Lay the pieces on a flat surface with the back side of the molding facing you and apply a spot of wood glue to one of the edges you just cut at a 45-degree angle.

    • 6

Place the edge you just put wood glue onto one the pieces you cut for the height of the picture frame. Hold them together and staple them twice toward the point the two pieces make and right below it. Repeat for all the pieces.

    • 7

Let the wood glue dry for 12 hours, keeping the frame flat.

    • 8

Stain or paint your picture frame to give it a finished look. Let the stain or paint dry for at least 24 hours.

    • 9

Cut a piece of cardboard half an inch wider then your document or picture.

    • 10

Slide the pre-cut glass into the frame and then place your picture or document behind the glass.

    • 11

Place the cardboard over the back of the frame and staple it on all four sides in the middle of each piece of molding.
