How to Make a Wingback Headboard

Headboards are easy to make because they do not require much, if any, sewing. Simply obtain a frame for the headboard, cover it with batting and fabric, and staple it to the wooden headboard. Because you are making your own, you can use whichever fabric you prefer. Match the curtains or wallpaper or go with something completely different. Headboards are inexpensive and versatile. The fabric can be switched out as often as you prefer. A wingback headboard is suitable for a classic look in the master bedroom. You also can design one to match wingback chairs.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the plywood to the desired shapes. The wingback headboard will have three pieces, a back and two sides. The back should be a rectangle or a close approximation. It can have a gentle curve to the top if you prefer. The width should be as wide as the bed you are putting the headboard behind. The two sides be exactly the same measurements.

    • 2

Cut the foam to match the wooden pieces.

    • 3

Sand the wood with the belt sander or sandpaper.

    • 4

Cut your fabric and batting to cover the front of the rectangle headboard with about four inches extra on each side. Cut enough fabric and batting to cover the entire side pieces plus several inches on all sides.

    • 5

Lay the fabric for the back piece on the floor, right side facing down. Place the batting on top, followed by the foam piece.

    • 6

Lay the back wood piece on top of the fabric, batting and foam, right side facing down.

    • 7

Pull the fabric sides over the edge of the wood. Pull up a little at a time. Pull the fabric tight. Staple the fabric and batting to the wood.

    • 8

Lay the side fabric pieces on the floor. Layer the batting, foam and wood on top. Lay the wood to cover the side that will be facing in to the bed.

    • 9

Pull the fabric tight. Staple it to the outside of the side pieces where it will meet the back of the headboard. Leave it free where it will need to wrap around to the outside of the side piece. Trim excess fabric on the one side to keep it from being lumpy.

    • 10

Put the side piece up against the back of the headboard. The outside of the side piece should not be covered at this point.

    • 11

Screw the side piece onto the back piece. Screw through both pieces of wood.

    • 12

Pull the fabric around the outside of the side piece. Staple it to the back of the back headboard piece.

    • 13

Repeat on the opposite side. Pull the fabric around the outside of the side piece. Staple it to the back of the back headboard piece.

    • 14

Put the headboard up against the wall. Place the bed in front of it.
