Mortiser Safety

A mortiser is a woodworking machine which cuts square and rectangular shapes into wood. It creates the mortise in mortise-and-tenon joints, which are used in furniture making. When using the machines, workers must follow safety rules to prevent personal injury.
  1. Danger Zone

    • When using a mortiser machine, there is a danger area which extends three inches around the bit and chuck, and five inches underneath the bit. When moving the quill forward, keep hands and fingers away from the bit. Stop the machine before clearing away sawdust and debris.

    Protection

    • Wear safety goggles to protect eyes from flying debris. Don't wear jewelry or loose clothing that can catch in the machine. Avoid long sleeves or long hair, which can also become entangled.

    Securing the Machine

    • The key should not be left in the chuck, but removed after the bit is secured. The machine should be placed at mid-chest level for safe access, and firmly secured to the table or bench.
