How to Build a Silver Chest

Building a silver chest for storage is a rewarding process, since a little bit of effort goes a long way. You can build a chest without a great deal of technical knowledge or specialist tools, and it will help your house be tidier, as well as more personalized. Building a silver chest will give your children somewhere to put their toys, or can be used to store any other sort of equipment. The more you wish to decorate the chest, the more professional it will look.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan the size of the chest that you are going to build. If necessary, measure the space that you wish the chest to fit into. Work out the dimensions before you begin the build. You will have three pairs of dimensions: the top and bottom of the chest, the front and back, and the two ends.

    • 2

Cut the plywood to the desired size, or buy it ready cut. Once you have your six sections, you can begin the build. Sand the plywood to ensure that it is smooth enough for safe use.

    • 3

Lay down the piece that will form the bottom of the chest. Attach the brackets to the four corners, ensuring that each corner faces outwards. Hammer the nails through the brackets to hold them in place. Place the back and front sections in and attach the brackets through them. Use wood glue on the join if required for extra adhesion. Repeat this process with the two end sections. You will now have an open-topped box.

    • 4

Attach the hinges to the top back section of the box, using screws. Once they are attached, line up the lid of the box and screw the hinges into this section with the screws. The box will now have a hinged lid. Once the box is complete, check all the joins to ensure they are secure. Use additional nails or screws if required.

Sand the entire chest once it is secure, and spray it, using silver spray paint. Hold the can around six inches from the chest and using a regular motion, spray the paint onto the surface. Once this has been done, allow to dry, and repeat if necessary. When you are happy with the color, paint a layer of varnish onto the surface.

Customize the chest as you wish. For the lid you might glue a handle on it, to aid with lifting. You may also wish to add further designs to the front and sides of the chest, depending on its use.
