How to Refinish Old Gold Mirror Frames

Gold mirror frames covered in real gold leaf were popular in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Gold-painted frames mimic their look and come in all sorts of shapes, designs and sizes. If you love to buy old framed mirrors from yard sales or happen to have one stashed away, you may want to refinish it to restore its original beauty.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the mirror from the frame. Or, cover the mirror with painter's plastic sheeting or craft paper, secured with masking tape.

    • 2

Sand the entire frame to remove the paint using 150-grit sandpaper. Wipe the frame clean of dust with a soft cloth.

    • 3

Spray two or three coats of gold paint onto the frame. If you'd like, you can alternate different shades of gold for a varied look. Let the paint dry between coats.

    • 4

Apply a dark wood stain using a paintbrush over the gold if you'd like an antique look. Brush one coat of the stain onto the frame, covering it completely.

For a distressed look, immediately wipe off the stain with a cloth, using gentle pressure. Brush on one more coat of stain, then wipe it off to complete the look. Let the stain dry completely.

Replace the mirror in the frame, or reveal it by carefully removing the masking tape and sheeting or craft paper.
