What Is Reed Wicker?

Reed wicker refers to the material used in making wicker furniture, baskets and other items. These reeds come from any of a number of different tall plants which grow in wet areas, such as marshes and the banks of ponds and rivers.

    • Many different plants are called reeds, including bulrushes, cattails, reed mace, rush, distaff, and flag. Any of these are also known as reed wicker. They grow in wet areas in North America, Asia, Europe and Africa and are described in many languages.

    • Reeds usually have a round seed head that is discarded before using the reed for wicker.

      The reeds used for wicker are tall and thin with long, flat stems The stems have joints that are visible when the reeds are woven into baskets and furniture.

      Reed wicker is used in making woven baskets, wicker furniture, place mats and other items. It is moistened to be easier to bend and weave without breaking the reed. Materials to repair wicker items are available in round, flat or flat oval types, in a variety of widths and lengths.
