How to Make a Wood Tapered Table Leg

A table looks more elegant and light if it has tapered legs. A tapered leg is one that starts at one size and eventually ends at a smaller size. It is often seen on dining room tables and matching chairs. The taper could be dramatic or slight or even curved like claw feet. It is a fairly easy process to make a table leg tapered as long as you use the the proper tools and take your time.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the leg and determine where the taper will start. Normally a taper starts 4 inches from the top. Mark this spot lightly with the pencil.

    • 2

Mark the bottom of the leg where you want the taper to end. A standard taper is 1/4 inch. If you want the taper to be dramatic, mark the leg one-third of the way in. If you want the taper to be all around the leg, mark the leg 1/4 inch in on all sides.

    • 3

Adjust the jig to 11/4-inches for the general taper of 1/4 inch.

    • 4

Slide the rip fence over the blade on the table saw. This will protect your hands.

    • 5

Run a practice test before working on the actual leg. Run the taper and the stop up the saw to make sure the measurements are correct.

    • 6

Place the leg on the table saw with the jig. Push it through the saw, being careful of your fingers.

    • 7

      Repeat for all the legs.
