How to Paint Bethlehem Stage Scenery

Bethlehem is the location for the story of the birth of Jesus Christ, and it is frequently part of the scenery in Christmas nativity plays. Typically, the scene depicts Bethlehem at night, with yellow and brown Middle Eastern style housing in the background, a starry night sky above with a single large star in the center, and a wooden barn in the foreground.

Instructions

    • 1

Sketch the outline of the Bethlehem cityscape on the scenery canvas using a pencil. This scene should resemble Middle Eastern housing with rectangular, flat roofed buildings. The line of the cityscape should be positioned about a third of the way from the bottom of the rectangular scenery canvas.

    • 2

Sketch the outline of the barn in the foreground. This should take up the middle two-thirds of the canvas and be "house-shaped" with a rectangular base and a pointed roof.

    • 3

Sketch the outline of the stars in the sky. Include a single large star in the center, directly above the middle of the barn.

    • 4

Paint the sky dark blue. Paint the stars yellow. Once the sky and the stars have dried, add touches of a lighter shade of yellow to all the stars, especially the central star.

    • 5

Paint the background buildings a yellow-brown color. Once they have dried, add features like black rectangular windows, and use a sponge and light brown paint to add texture to the buildings.

    • 6

Paint the barn a dark shade of brown. Once this first coating has dried, add details like wood texture lines in a lighter shade of brown.
