Old-Time Chair-Making Crafts

Many people who enjoy decorative and functional craft work take pleasure in furniture-building projects, because furniture pieces make a creative and artistic statement while providing a practical purpose in the home. Old-fashioned chairs have a traditional, nostalgic charm, and although chairs built from scratch aren’t quite antique, they can still imbue that old-time, rustic feel with the right materials. Use wood stains and retro fabric patterns for an old-time effect. As an alternative, restore an old chair or build a counterpart piece to it, such as an ottoman or another chair.
  1. Wooden Chairs

    • Wooden rocking chairs are perhaps the most popular kind of old-time chair crafters build. They’re relaxing, don’t take up much space and add an old-fashioned, country charm to any room. For smaller projects, make a child-size rocking chair, or a rocking horse. Other old-time wooden chairs craft projects include telephone chairs, stools, barber chairs and high chairs, which can be used to house and showcase doll crafts.

    Upholstered Chairs

    • Upholstered chairs are a bit more intricate and time-consuming than wooden chair crafts, because of the extra steps involved in creating padded seats and backs neatly covered with fabric. To start off with a simpler craft project, build an old-fashioned vanity seat, washboard stool or table chair, and create a padded, upholstered seat for it with a staple gun, foam and fabric. For advanced upholstered projects, craft an old-time divan chair, Bergerie, Chippendale or easy chair with matching ottoman.
