How to Replace the Sheet Caning in Chair Backs

Chair caning is a technique that furniture makers use to add a wicker appearance to a chair, table or other piece of furniture. For chairs, caning is usually placed on the seat or backing, installed using one of two methods. The first method involves weaving many different strands of caning until they form a solid seat or back. The second method—which is much easier and time efficient—uses a pre-made sheet of rattan webbing. Over time, chairs with caning become worn with use. It is possible to replace the caning on your chair back or seat using the sheet method.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the back of the chair from the frame. A screwdriver or other tool is necessary to complete this task, depending on the chair. Use a router to remove the old rattan from the backing. Be careful not to damage the timber during this process.

    • 2

Soak the sheet of rattan in water for about 20 minutes and then remove the wet rattan and place it over the backing of the chair. The shiny side of the sheet should be facing upwards, toward the worker.

    • 3

Use the wooden wedge to push the rattan webbing into the groove of the chair backing, where the old rattan used to be. Work around the perimeter of the backing, wedging in the groove, all the way around.

    • 4

Cut the excess rattan webbing using a utility knife. Cut the webbing so that it is no more than a few millimeters below the edge of the groove.

    • 5

Apply a thin line of Poly Vinyl Acetate (PVA) glue into the groove all the way around the backing. Take a five minute break while the glue sets.

    • 6

Insert the cane spline into the groove and use a hammer to tap it in firmly. Work around the perimeter of the chair backing. When reaching a corner, apply a bit of water to the spline to make it more flexible. When reaching the point where starting, trim off the excess spline and wedge the end into the groove with the hammer.

Wipe off the excess glue with a damp cloth and let the chair dry naturally for at least 12 hours before staining. Reassemble the chair backing. Insert the proper screws as required.
