How to Plant a Simple Garden

You don't need a large garden to provide you with all the succulent vegetables you and your family like during summer dinners. Incorrectly planting, however, can create harvesting gaps, leaving you unable to harvest any vegetables at all due to seasonal growth differences. Before you plant you must plan your garden properly. Once you do, even a simple garden can offer a summer bounty of nourishing veggies.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Hoe
  • Paper
  • Pencil

Instructions

    • 1

Hoe your ground in four separate rows 10 feet in length using your measuring tape to measure the length and the hoe to dig the earth.

    • 2

Sketch a garden plan with one "green" vegetable such as green beans or green peppers in one row along with one vine vegetable such as cucumbers or cabbage.

    • 3

Sketch a garden plan with stalk vegetables such as tomatoes alongside tubers such as radishes.

    • 4

Sketch a garden plan with vine vegetables such as cucumbers or watermelon alongside stalk vegetables such as peppers.

    • 5

Sketch a garden plan with "sprout" vegetables such as lettuce or cabbage away from vine vegetables such as watermelon or cucumbers.

    • 6

Plant the seeds at a depth of two to three times the diameter of the seed.

    • 7

Cover with black, fertilized topsoil rather than covering up the seeds with the unearthed soil from hoeing.

    • 8

Water each morning and evening until the soil becomes damp, but not full of puddles, using the garden hose or watering can.
