How to Freeze Muskmelon

Muskmelon, more commonly known as cantaloupe, has a webbed rind and a juicy inner flesh. Most people pick them or purchase them from the store, and eat them right away. However, it is possible to freeze muskmelon for storage. This is especially helpful once the season is winding down, and it allows you to enjoy the melon long into the winter months. There are several ways to freeze muskmelons depending upon your tastes.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the cold water faucet and wash the muskmelon with a clean vegetable brush. Because you won't be eating the rind of the melon, it is not necessary to use a vegetable wash. You simply need to remove dirt from the outside to prevent it from getting on the fruit flesh when you cut the muskmelon.

    • 2

Place the muskmelon on a cutting board with either the stem or blossom end pointing up. Cut the muskmelon in half with a butcher knife from the stem to the blossom end.

    • 3

Scoop out the seeds in the center of the muskmelon with a spoon. Discard the seeds in the trash.

    • 4

Cut each half of the muskmelon into quarter slices. Place the edge of the knife between the inner skin and the flesh, and slice the skin off each piece of the fruit. Cut the muskmelon flesh into bite-size cubes.

    • 5

Add 2 cups of sugar to 4 cups of water in a large bowl to make a syrup. Mix the sugar water with a spoon. Place the Muskmelon pieces into large plastic freezer storage bags or plastic storage containers. Only fill the containers halfway with the fruit.

    • 6

Pour the syrup over the melon pieces until they are covered. Seal the bags or containers and place in the freezer.

    • 7

Place the muskmelon pieces into freezer bags or containers, and sprinkle sugar over them if you do not want to use a syrup. Mix the pieces around to distribute the sugar and seal the containers. Place in the freezer.

    • 8

Lay the pieces over a sheet of wax paper, if you prefer not to sweeten the muskmelon. Lay another sheet of wax paper over the melon pieces and place in containers for freezing.
