Scallions and sweet peas make a pleasant combination in many meals such as stir fries. You can learn how to plant and grow your own so that you can have fresh ingredients for cooking. Sweet peas are an early crop and can be planted as soon as the ground can be worked. Scallions need to be planted a little later, but still can be planted before the last frost date for your area. Instructions

  1. Scallions

    • 1

Work the soil in a well-drained garden bed with a garden fork to loosen it. Pull out any weeds as you loosen the soil.

    • 2

Add organic compost into the soil and work it into the bed using the garden fork.

    • 3

Press a row of 1-inch-deep holes into the soil spaced one to two inches apart with your finger along the length of the bed.

    • 4

Plant one scallion bulb in each hole. Cover over each hole with soil and pack it down. Make more rows in your bed if desired. Space the rows two to four inches apart.

    • 5

Water the scallions with a watering can to thoroughly wet the soil. Keep the bed weed free. Harvest the scallions when the tops are approximately 6 inches tall.

    Sweet Peas

    • 6

Work a well-drained garden bed with a garden fork and mix in compost to create a bed that is high in organic matter.

    • 7

Make small 1- to 2-inch-deep furrows with the handle of a garden hoe. Space the furrows at least 18 inches apart.

    • 8

Put up a trellis along the back side of each row for climbing varieties. Stake the trellis with T-posts and use wire fencing or chicken wire. Place the trellis three to four inches away from the back side of the furrow.

    • 9

Plant the sweet pea seeds one to four inches apart as soon as the soil can be worked. Cover over the seeds and pack the soil down with your hands.

    • 10

Water the rows thoroughly with a watering can. Keep the soil moist throughout the season.
