How to Raise Cucumbers Inside

Cucumber is a warm season vegetable. It does well in temperatures between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, making it a good candidate for indoor growing. Cucumbers need between 8 and 12 hours of good sunlight, so if you live in an apartment or a house that does not have a southerly facing window, cucumbers might not work for you without grow lights. Without the proper light, cucumbers will fail to develop properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Set a piece of fiberglass screen at the bottom of your pot.

    • 2

Mix together 1 part each potting soil, perlite, sphagnum peat moss and compost.

    • 3

Fill the container up to 3/4 inches from the top of the pot.

    • 4

Plant five or six seeds in the center of the pot. Cover the seeds with a 1/2 inch of soil. Water the soil so it is moist and set it in a place with sun.

    • 5

Remove all the seedlings except the two largest ones. Once the plants reach 8 to 10 inches in height, cut one of them, leaving just one plant in the container. Cut, do not pull, to prevent injuring the other seedling.

    • 6

Add several stakes to the pot in a teepee formation, tying the stakes at the top. Guide the cucumber up the stake as it grows.

    • 7

Apply a water-soluble fertilizer once a week once the cucumber begins to vine.
