How to Move Radishes to a Pot

Like many other vegetables, radishes grow well either in the ground or in containers. Even if you do not begin radishes in a pot, you can transfer radishes from a seeding tray or from the ground and into a pot. Once you move radishes to a pot, you can help them thrive by providing the seedlings with the same care you give them in any other location.

Things You'll Need

  • 6-inch to 1-gallon pot
  • Spade

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a 6-inch to 1-gallon pot with potting mix or soil, depending upon the number of plants that you would like to plant per pot. According to Texas A&M's Horticulture Department, a 6-inch pot is sufficient for one radish plant, while a gallon pot can hold up to three radish plants. Add potting mix or soil to approximately 2 inches from the top of the pot.

    • 2

Spread a layer of compost over the top of the soil, depending upon the size of the pot. For a 6-inch pot, a 1/8- to 1/4-inch layer of compost is sufficient, while a 1-inch layer is more effective for a 1-gallon pot. Use a spade to mix the compost down into the potting mix or soil.

    • 3

Wait until the radish plant has produced two to three leaves before transplanting the radishes into the pot. Radishes grow rapidly, so the development of two to three leaves should take only three to five days.

    • 4

Dig around the roots of the radish plants that you want to move if the radishes were started in the ground. Once the soil is loosened around the root ball, grasp around the root ball, pull the radish plant up from the ground and brush away loose soil with your fingers. If you started the radish plants in a seeding tray, push up on the bottom of the seeding tray compartment while simultaneously pulling up on the base of the radish plant to extract the plant.

Wet the potting mix or soil in the pot into which you want to transfer the radish plant and make a hole just large enough to hold the root ball. Place the radish roots down into the hole and push the soil against the stem to keep the plant upright.
