How to Space Tomatoes by the Square Foot for Gardening

Tomatoes are very frequently used in home gardens. They are usually simple to grow and can produce many tomatoes each harvest. There are many varieties of tomatoes that can be grown and harvested, but there are really two main categories of tomatoes: bush tomatoes and vining tomatoes. Vining tomatoes will require some sort of large trellis or stakes to keep them stable. Bush tomatoes will need to be planted with more square footage in between each plant. Spacing the tomatoes is simple by following the steps listed below.

  1. Bush Tomatoes

      Measure to find the area in which the tomatoes will be planted with the measuring tape. Measure the length and width to find the area.

      Use measuring tape to measure every 3 feet from one end of the garden to the other. Bush tomatoes should be planted at least 3 feet apart.

      Mark the locations of the bush tomato plants by making an outline of the planned holes with the shovel.

      Dig the holes with the shovel and place the bush tomato plants in the holes and back fill.

    Vining Tomatoes

      Use the measuring tape to find the area in which the tomatoes will be planted. Measure the length and width to find the area.

      Measure every 1 1/2 feet from one end of the garden to the other. Vining tomatoes should be planted at least 1 1/2 feet apart.

      Mark the locations of the bush tomato plants by making an outline of the planned holes with the shovel.
