How to Get Grubs From Broccoli

Broccoli is one of the easier plants for home gardeners to grow, however, most home-grown broccoli that has not been treated with pesticides will harbor worms. Broccoli head worms and cabbage worms will attack the vegetable and resemble caterpillar-like grubs that feed on the crowns, and small white earthworms burrowing into the stems. Although considered harmless, it is best to remove the grubs from broccoli before consumption, especially if it will be eaten raw.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the kettle with cold tap water. Add 2 tbsp. of salt per quart of water.

    • 2

Cut the broccoli as you normally would for serving. Add the broccoli to the saltwater. Place a bowl, filled with water, on top of the broccoli to weigh the broccoli down in order to keep it completely submerged in the saltwater.

    • 3

Allow the broccoli to soak in the saltwater for 30 minutes. Soaking it in salt water will drive the worms from the broccoli.

    • 4

Remove the bowl from the kettle. Scoop out any worms floating on the surface of the water with a spoon or your fingers. Remove the broccoli from the water. Pick off any worms that are still attached to the broccoli.

    • 5

Rinse the broccoli under cool tap water to remove the saltwater.
