A List of Patio Tomatoes

Just because you do not have a vegetable garden or space in your yard for a garden does not mean you can't enjoy home-grown, fresh vegetables. If you have a patio that receives sunlight for at least part of the day, consider planting tomatoes in containers and growing them that way. Some tomato varieties are better than others for use in containers, so make sure you select a recommended variety for optimal results.
  1. Roma

    • Roma tomatoes work well in containers because they have an upright growing habit and they form a bush. Roma tomatoes are small, oblong, bright red tomatoes and they ripen all at once, rather than having an extended growing season. Roma tomatoes are prized for their use in sauces and for canning, so consider planting this variety if you like making marinara sauce. Roma tomatoes mature in about 75 days.

    Tiny Tim

    • Tiny Tim tomato plants were specially created for use in containers, so they make a perfect option for your patio. The plants create bush-like plants and do not need to be staked. Their tomatoes are about 1 inch in diameter and are bright red. Tiny Tim tomatoes are very sweet and are perfect for snacking on or for using in salads. These cherry tomatoes are ready for harvest in about 45 days.

    Patio Hybrid

    • The patio hybrid is another type of tomato variety that was designed for use in containers. The tomatoes grow to about 3 oz. and are relatively large for the dwarf size of the tomato plant. Patio hybrids are strong plants and are resistant to many of the diseases that tomato plants can be susceptible to. This plant matures in about 65 days and will continually produce tomatoes through the growing season, until the first frost.

    Red Robin

    • The Red Robin variety of tomato plants is another dwarf plant that creates small, 1-inch diameter cherry tomatoes. The tomatoes are mature in about 55 days and produce all of their fruit at once, then die back for the season. Red Robin tomato plants only grow to about 6 inches tall, so they are perfect for a patio that has only a bit of space. These mild cherry tomatoes work well in a variety of different preparations, such as pasta and salad.
