How to Hull Cow Peas

Cowpeas are actually a type of bean that is a traditional crop in the southern United States. They can be harvested as snap beans at an immature stage, shelling beans at a mature stage and dry beans after the mature beans have dried. You shell the beans once they have reached a mature stage and are plump and firm. They are similar to a lima bean at this stage. The shells are swollen with fully developed cowpeas. You can hull or shell cowpeas by hand.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick or shear the mature cowpeas from the plants once they are plump and firm. Snap off or clip the small stems that hold them to the plants with your fingers or garden shears.

    • 2

Place the harvested cowpeas into a harvest basket as you pick them. Dump the harvested cowpeas into a colander and rinse them under cold water in a sink.

    • 3

Split the shells open one at a time with your fingers and thumbs and separate the two halves of the shells to hull them. Pull out the cowpeas from inside the shells and empty them into a separate colander.

    • 4

Rinse the shelled cowpeas in the colander under cold water in the sink.
