How to Spud Potatoes

Potatoes are a staple in homes across the United States and across the world. They can be used as a side dish or as an entree, and can be flavored with a variety of spices and toppings. Having a potato patch at home gives you potatoes on the table from spring through late fall. Spudding or sprouting potatoes is the first step in creating your annual potato patch.

Instructions

    • 1

Stick your potato with four toothpicks, spaced evenly around the potato's center.

    • 2

Fill the mason jar about two-thirds full of water, and place the potato into the jar, letting the toothpicks act as a brace. The potato should be about half covered in water.

    • 3

Place the mason jar in a sunny place, such as a window sill or a sun porch.

    • 4

Change the water if it gets cloudy, and add water if it evaporates and gets too low. You should see sprouts forming below the water line and, after about 3 weeks, stems and leaves will sprout from the top of the potato.

    • 5

Plant the potato in a pot or in your garden, vine up, after about a month of sprouting in the mason jar.
