How to Replant Asparagus

Asparagus is a hardy perennial that can produce for generations if it maintained and cared for properly. It does have to be thinned throughout the years to avoid becoming root bound. If you have the opportunity to replant or transplant a patch of asparagus, give it a strong start by replanting it correctly. Asparagus is planted in a trench and covered over as it matures. Asparagus has a tendency to raise up as it grows, so it is important to continue to cover it for best results.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig a 9- to 12-inch-deep trench that is 12 to 18 inches wide and long enough so that you can plant the number of transplants that you have 18 to 24 inches apart using a shovel. Lay the soil on either lengthwise edge of the trench.

    • 2

Mix 1 part each sand, soil and compost and work it into the trench with a garden fork. Loosen the soil to the depth of the garden fork's tines.

    • 3

Lay the transplants into the trench 18 to 24 inches apart with the crowns facing up. Cover over the transplants with approximately 2 inches of soil. Gently pat the soil down.

    • 4

Water the soil thoroughly with a watering can. Cover over the asparagus as it raises throughout the growing season.
