How to Grow Celery in Water

Celery is one of several vegetables that can be grown using hydroponic methods, which substitutes water and dissolved nutrients for soil. By using hydroponics, you can set up a large celery garden on any roof or balcony, and avoid the need of heavy bags of potting soil. With the addition of an ultraviolet lighting rig, hydroponics allows you to turn a basement into a celery garden as well.

Things You'll Need

  • Hydroponic base or suitable trough
  • Plastic hoses
  • Circulation pump
  • Plastic mesh
  • Plastic or wire ties
  • Perlite mat or strips
  • Celery seeds
  • Nutrient solution

Instructions

    • 1

Place your hydroponic base in a location that receives plenty of sun, is reasonably safe from disturbance by pets and wild animals in search of a drink, and is near an electrical outlet. Plug in the plastic hoses that connect the hydroponic base to the circulation pump, and then connect them to each other, if there is more than one in your celery garden.

    • 2

Lay plastic mesh across the top of the base, and tie it down with plastic or wire ties. Lay perlite atop the mesh.

    • 3

Place celery seeds into the perlite every 2 or 3 inches.

    • 4

Mix the nutrient solution with water as directed by the manufacturer. Pour this into the system, fill the base, and switch on the circulatory pump.

    • 5

Monitor your celery, and add water as necessary to compensate for evaporation. The roots should start to grow from the perlite and into the water beneath after two to three weeks, and the celery stalks should be ready to harvest after about four months.
