Description of a Goliath Tomato

The Goliath tomato is aptly name because it produces fruit weighing up to three pounds. It is an excellent choice for gardeners because it is resilient to disease, has bright, tasty fruit, and certain hybrid varieties produce all year round. Cooks often slice and dice Goliaths and add them to salads owing to their sweet and succulent flesh.
  1. Hybrid Goliath

    • There are two main types of Hybrid Goliath: Bush and Early Hybrids. Bush Goliath tomatoes are primarily for patio gardeners, as the bush only grows up to three and a half feet tall. However, despite its compact size the plant produces fruit up to four inches in diameter. The fruit is high in sugar and best suited to salads. Early Goliath tomatoes are similar to Bush tomatoes in size and resilience, but have a more perfectly rounded fruit produced very early in the season.

    Goliath Heirloom

    • The heirloom variety is the type which has been passed through generations without cross pollination. In this instance, growers have produced the Goliath Heirloomsince the 1800s. The Goliath produces early, big, beefsteak tomatoes. Fruit generally grow between one and three pounds in size. The tomatoes are bright red and slightly ribbed on the exterior. Inside it is fleshy and does not have many seeds. The plants are resilient to disease and produce fruit year round.

    Growing Goliaths

    • Space Goliath tomato seeds 8-24 inches or 24-36 inches, depending on your space and how big you will allow the plants to grow. The plants grow up to eight feet tall, so the spacing gives room to the plant. Grow Goliath plants in full sun exposure, if packed closely together. Any you spread out need partial shade for protection, too.

    Tips for Planting

    • Planting seeds early on indoors will help give Goliath plants a good start so when the warm weather arrives, you can simply transfer the seedlings. If you have planted the Early Hybrid Goliath, cover the seedlings at night to protect from any frost. Hoe small trenches to plant the seedlings, and use a starter fertilizer to give the plants a kick start. Black plastic mulch is good for planting, and gives added protection against frost. Water the plants regularly.
