Honeydew Varieties

Known as warm-weather crops, melons are commercially grown in Arizona, California and Texas where the hot, long summers help the fruits ripen to peak sweetness. The melon family consists of cantaloupe, muskmelon and honeydew. Honeydew melons typically have green or white flesh with a white to yellow rind; however, some varieties have been bred that have orange or pink flesh with white to pink rinds. Fruits are round to oval and usually weigh 3 to 6 pounds.

    Honeydew Consumption

    • Ripened at the peak of summer, honeydew melons are traditionally eaten as an accompaniment to barbecued foods. It is also a common component of fruit salads comprised of grapes, watermelon and cantaloupe. Refreshing and light cold soups are prepared using honeydew as the base. Additionally, their light, sweet taste makes them an excellent companion to salty prosciutto.
