Why Are Your Potato Plants So Tall?

Store-bought potatoes just can't compete with the flavor of fresh homegrown potatoes. The potato plant itself will likely tower above the rest of your garden as the root system produces a number of delicious tubers that can be harvested within weeks.
  1. Growth Requirements

    • Potatoes like plenty of sun and fertile soil with a pH of 6.0 to 6.5. After planting in springtime, the large plants grow vigorously during the growing season and often reach 3 feet in height.

    Plant Height

    • Potato plants grow fairly tall if subjected to healthy growing conditions and extra fertilization. Once plants reach 1 foot tall, mound around them with soil to protect the developing tubers from oxygen exposure, which turns them green.

    Harms

    • If potato plants are tall and spindly, this may be a result of inadequate light, as is the case with many plants that seek sunlight. Tall potato plants is not necessarily a bad thing; as long as the plants are healthy enough to support themselves, they produce large potatoes.
