How to Grow Pumpkins in Tires

Use recycled planters to grow vegetables, such as old tires. Rather than throwing out your tires to decompose in the next few decades in a landfill, keep them for growing pumpkins. Spare tires work well for city dwellers with the space to grow pumpkins but may lack soil. Late May or early June is the optimal time to plant pumpkins for fall harvest. Water these plants more frequently in late June and early August when the plants begin fruiting.

      Choose an area of your property to place tires where the pumpkins can grow successfully. Pumpkins are vining plants that grow up to 12 feet from their original starting point. Selecta spot where they cannot interfere with other plants.

      Place however many tires you will be utilizing in rows that are 4 to 6 feet apart. Fill each tire with potting soil.

      Place three to five pumpkin seeds in each tire about 1 inch deep.

      Watering the plants deeply about once or twice a week encourages healthy root and vine growth. Pumpkins withstand short periods of hot, dry heat well. Hoeing and shallow cultivation keeps the plants weed free. Wait until the seedlings have their first true leaves, and then thin back to the best plant every 2 feet.

      Harvest pumpkins from your tire planters in the fall when they are a deep, solid orange color.
