How to Grow Corn on the Cob Living in an Apartment with a Balcony

You can enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables even if you live in an apartment with just a balcony. Container gardening is popular among city dwellers who lack a typical garden plot. The only limits to what you can grow are the size of your balcony and your U.S. hardiness zone. Grow corn on the cob and other vegetables on your patio and have the convenience of harvesting your crops right outside your door.

Things You'll Need

  • Growing container (36 to 48 inches long by 12 to 18 inches wide and 8 inches deep)
  • Potting soil
  • Well composted organic matter
  • Twine
  • Viable corn seed
  • Catch basin

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a gardening container with a mixture of two parts potting soil and one part composted organic matter. Place the container where it will receive at least eight hours of direct sunlight each day.

    • 2

Place a catch basin under the gardening container. The catch basin catches any water that may run through the container so the water does not run off the balcony and onto your neighbor's patio.

    • 3

Plant the corn 1/2 inch deep and 6 to 9 inches apart. Water the seeds well. Keep the soil moist until the seeds sprout.

    • 4

Thin the seedlings to 9 inches apart. Add a layer of compost once the stalks are 12 inches tall. Water the corn daily to a depth of 1/4 inch. Vegetables need 1 to 2 inches of water each week.

    • 5

Harvest the ears of corn when the silk turns brown and the ears are full. Simply pull down on the ear to remove it from the stalk.
