How to Boil a Loofah

A gourd from the garden is an unlikely bath accessory, but a loofah, a sponge-like squash that grows on a vine, can be harvested and used almost immediately as an exfoliant in the shower or a dish scrubber in the kitchen sink. Remove the skin, shake out the seeds and unveil a fibrous sponge that is all natural, long lasting and bacteria resistant. Sterilize your loofah in boiling water for the deepest clean.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the pan with enough water to cover the loofah completely. Bring the water to a boil before adding the loofah.

    • 2

Drop the loofah into the boiling water using tongs.

    • 3

Push the loofah under the water until it is fully submerged. Allowing the loofah to move freely prevents it from contacting the sides of the pan and burning. Leave the loofah in the boiling water for five minutes.

    • 4

Remove the loofah from the boiling water using tongs. Shake off the excess water and place the loofah on a drying rack until it is completely dry.
