How to Dry Corn in a Bin

Drying corn is a necessary process to have corn crop available during the winter months when corn will not grow naturally. This process can be done for the backyard farmer or professional farmers. The larger the project, the bigger bin you will need to dry the corn in. The largest size that a professional farmer can use will be 20 feet deep and 30 feet in diameter. With a backyard farmer, a much smaller bin can be used for drying corn.

  Prepare a storage bin that has a perforated floor and exhaust vents at the top. Install fan air-intake units that move air through the perforated floor and up the bin and finally out the exhaust vents. The fans need to be located at the bottom of the bin so the air is blown under the perforated floor. Have a gap of 1 foot between the perforated floor and a solid foundation, preferably concrete. This way the air drawn in can only be pushed up and more is forced through.

  Turn on the intake fan as you begin filling the bin. The corn will dry in zones from the bottom up. Make sure the air is circulating before you put any corn into the bin.

  Test the corn at the top of the bin after several days for moisture content. Once you can verify the corn is dry you can empty the bin and add a new batch of corn.
