DIY Tomato Cage Wire Hoops

The weight of a healthy tomato can cause the plant to droop. Tomatoes on the ground will attracted pests and be attacked by rot. A wire hoop cage can act as a support and the holes in the cage can let the plant grow uninhibited. This allows for vertical growth of tomato plants, maximizing space and giving you more room for other vegetables in the garden. The hoop cages bring the fruit up off the ground, making for easy picking.

Instructions

    • 1

Roll the mesh out on the ground; the driveway is best. Use a tape measure to measure 5 feet of mesh. Use bolts cutters to cut down to the 5-foot mark, making sure to leave sharp wire fingers.

    • 2

Pull the length of mesh away from the cage. Cut the frame railing off the bottom of the mesh to make spikes that will stick into the ground.

    • 3

Use pliers to curl the fingers down the vertical side of the mesh into hooks. Stand on the mesh and pull the framed side of the mesh toward the fingers. Use the pliers to crimp the top hook to the top of the frame railing. Crimp each finger from top to bottom.
