The Sweetest Tomato Varieties

Tomatoes are found in some of your favorite foods, whether they are sliced on sandwiches, pureed and made into sauces, stewed in chili or prepared in countless other ways. The type of tomato you choose for each culinary use depends on the desired taste of the finished product. The many varieties of tomatoes range from an acidic taste to a quite sweet one. For those tomato lovers with a sweet tooth, a few varieties rank at or near the top on the sweet scale.
  1. Sun Cherry

    • The sun cherry is a vigorous plant that grows in the early season. The plant, which is usually staked for best results, produces up to 20 cherry tomatoes that measure about an inch in diameter. The small tomatoes grow in a cluster on one continuous vine. The sun cherry tomato is considered the sweetest variety of the cherry tomatoes, according to the website Natural Hub. It is closely related to the popular sun gold cherry tomato, which is often considered to have the best overall taste of the cherry types.

    Cherokee Purple

    • It is widely believed that since the late 1800s, the Cherokee tribe has grown this variety of tomato, which is said to be the sweetest large variety available. It has very little acidic taste. The tomato weighs up to 9 ounces and is grown in the mid season. The Cherokee purple gets its name from its growers as well as its appearance. It is a dirty pink-to-purple color with hints of brown. The flesh inside is the color of a red brick and the gelatinous insides are green.

    Sweet Million

    • The sweet million is a cherry tomato that is sometimes hard to distinguish from the sun cherry. Its taste is also similar. It is a small, deep red tomato hybrid that grows in the mid season on a plant that reaches as high as 6 feet.

    Brandywine

    • The Brandywine tomato is an old cultivar that is thought to have originated with the Amish community before 1885. It is a large heirloom tomato that is pink in appearance and has a soft flesh. It is a very sweet tomato, but it also retains some acidity that gives it a complex and full flavor that enjoys great popularity. Even though disease-resistant crossbreeds exist today, the original Brandywine remains a favorite. The Brandywine is highly susceptible to plant diseases, especially in humid conditions.
