Use a shovel to dig a hole about 1 foot deep. Mix potting soil or compost into the top 6 inches of the soil. Continue doing this in a circle that is about 4 feet in diameter.
Evenly place six bamboo poles around the circle. Shove the poles into the ground so that they are about 18 inches deep. Take the tops of all six poles in your hand and secure them with a piece of string. The poles should resemble the shape of a tepee.
Create a mound of dirt around each of the six poles that is about 6 inches wide and 3 inches tall. Once there is no more threat of frost, plant five pole bean seeds in the mound. Place the seeds about an inch deep and between 2 and 4 inches apart. Water them thoroughly after planting.
Place additional pole bean tepees at least 8 feet apart.
Thin the bean plants growing around each pole after they germinate. When the plants reach about 5 inches tall, remove two of them by their roots. Choose the two plants that look weak or that don't seem to be growing as well as the others.
As the pole beans grow, use plant ties to attach them loosely to the trellis. This will train them to grow upward onto the pole, rather than down on the ground. Tie them loosely so that they have room to move and expand.
