How to Build a Vegetable Planter Box With Cinder Blocks

Cinder blocks are a convenient means of planting small amounts of vegetables without the need for building a raised bed. The large holes in the sides of the blocks hold soil up in a miniature version of a raised bed. These blocks provide adequate depth for growing most vegetables, but you will need to prepare the blocks for planting seeds or transplanting vegetables into them.

Things You'll Need

  • Burlap cloth
  • Potting soil
  • Vegetable seeds or seedlings

Instructions

    • 1

Place a burlap cloth on the ground where you will place the cinder block planter box. This allows for drainage while preventing soil from being washed out of the bottom of the container from excess water in the area.

    • 2

Set the cinder block on top of the cloth with the holes facing up.

    • 3

Fill the holes in the cinder block to within one half inch of the top with potting soil.

    • 4

Pour water over the soil to lightly dampen it.

    • 5

Insert the vegetable seeds or seedlings into the soil to the depth required for the particular plant.

    • 6

Water the soil again so it is wet to the same depth you planted the seeds or plants.

    • 7

Continue care of the vegetables in the cinder block planter as you would any other container garden.
