How to Make Tipi Poles

Planting a tipi in the garden is both practical and fun. Beans and a number of other plants grow readily up the poles, and the tipi poles are space savers, which is a boon to a small garden space. Additionally, garden tipis make enchanting play spaces which few children can resist. While different variations on design and building a tipi pole structure are available, the differences are minimal.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose an appropriate spot to build the tipi pole structure. You'll want a space of about 4 feet in diameter that receives at least 5 hours of daily sun.

    • 2

Loosen the soil with the shovel or hoe and then draw a circle of about 4 feet in diameter with the tool.

    • 3

Space the poles equally around the circle. Drive the poles at least several inches into the ground to secure them.

    • 4

Gather the poles at the top and secure by tying twine around the poles about 2 to 4 inches from the top.

    • 5

Plant a bean seed about 2 inches deep on both sides of each pole. Cover with a couple of inches of soil and water.
