How to Grow Black Pepper Herbs

The black pepper herb can be a tricky plant to harvest because it is prone to diseases. Root rot and spots can develop on the plant if it is set in soil that was previously occupied by plants from the nightshade family. The plants can also transfer diseases if they are placed close to each other. The plant won't bear pepper until its second or third year of growth, so patience will help you out with this particular plant.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant the seeds early in the warm season, in a shady area and in soil that is tested to pH 5.5 to 6.5, which is indicated on its packaging when bought at a store. Plant the crop in an area with a high temperature, approximately 75 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit on average throughout the year.

    • 2

Water the plant regularly, every day in a hot climate or whenever the soil is dry. Make sure the soil is moist but not soggy.

    • 3

Hammer a post into the ground so the plant has a support. The plant will climb by itself.

    • 4

Continue to water and trim the stems for two to three years. Harvest the peppers between six and eight months after flowering.
