How to Make a Plastic Trellis

A garden trellis supports ivy and certain types of roses as well as cucumbers, peas and other climbing plants. In addition to their decorative properties, trellises elevate fruits above ground, preventing fungal growth and encouraging circulation. A plastic garden trellis is easier to maintain than wooden or metal varieties, due to its ability to repel water. You can make your own plastic trellis with PVC pipes and vinyl lattice panels, available at home stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the PVC pipe into three 5-foot sections, using a hacksaw or PVC pipe cutter.

    • 2

Place end caps on the tops of the PVC pipes.

    • 3

Lay the PVC pipes on a flat surface so they are parallel to each other and 4 feet apart. Lay the lattice panel over the PVC pipe, leaving 1 foot of space free at the bottom ends of the pipes. The side and top edges of the lattice should be flush with the side and top edges of the pipes.

    • 4

Measure and mark screw holes on the lattice at 1-foot intervals up each side. Make matching markings on the PVC pipes so that the holes drilled in the markings will match up perfectly.

    • 5

Drill holes in each of the markings so the holes go all the way through the lattice and PVC pipes.

    • 6

Attach the lattice to the PVC pipes, using screws and nuts.

    • 7

Drive the trellis 1 foot deep in the desired garden spot, using a fence post driver. The bottom of the lattice should now be flush with the ground. The trellis is now ready to support garden plants.
