How to Treat Blossoms While Growing Onions

The presence of flowers on an onion plant indicate a significant problem. When an onion's growth cycle is disturbed, often by erratic temperatures, it can produce flowers and seeds too early. This effectively ends the onion's life cycle and wreaks serious havoc on the bulb. Removing the flower cannot rectify this. Such a situation can vex an unsuspecting gardener, yet flowers also represent a silver lining, in that they can be harvested and used for myriad purposes.

Instructions

    • 1

Harvest and consume the onions' bulbs as quickly as possible. Onions from plants that have flowered cannot be stored.

    • 2

Let the flower grow to seed. Remove the blossom and collect the seeds, which you may plant the following season.

    • 3

Cut the onion blossoms to incorporate into a floral arrangement. They pair well with bright flowers such as sunflowers and marigolds.

    • 4

Eat the blossoms of green onions. They can garnish a salad, or you may fry them into golden brown fritters. Consumed Gourmet, a recipe and food photography website, provides an excellent recipe. You can also employ the blossoms as a fresh substitute for onion rings.
