How to Build an Asparagus Box

Asparagus is a springtime treat for gardeners who have the space for the perennial vegetable. Asparagus stalks are actually sprouts that develop into ferns if not cut for eating. You can grow them in a container but because the asparagus plant develops such large root masses, the ideal box is tall and long, unlike the shorter growing containers for other vegetables. You will have to change the soil every year but you will be able to raise a healthy batch of asparagus to add to your spring dishes without needing yard space.

  • 2 sheets of 1/2-inch exterior grade plywood

Instructions

    • 1

Cut two pieces of 4-by-3 foot exterior grade plywood. These will form the sides of the tall and long planter.

    • 2

Cut two end pieces of 3-by-1 foot exterior grade plywood to form the ends.

    • 3

Cut one piece of 4-by-1 foot exterior grade plywood to form the bottom.

    • 4

Drill 1/2-inch holes across the bottom piece of plywood, spacing them 4 inches apart and 2 -inches in from the exterior edge. These will form the drainage holes for the asparagus box.

    • 5

Connect the sides with 3-foot long 2-inch L-bracket to form an open ended box. Connect the bottom with two 3-foot long L-brackets on either side.

    • 6

Invert and set on several bricks spaced several inches apart on each side in a spot where the asparagus will get full sun.

    • 7

Fill the box with 24 inches of compost and then 10 inches of chicken-straw.

    • 8

Plant the asparagus crowns 12 inches apart along the top of the soil. As they grow they will fill in the rest of the surface. Water lightly after planting and then every couple of days if the soil feels dry.
