How to Amend Soil With Perlite

Perlite is a volcanic mineral and a suitable soil amendment for both clay and sandy soils. Perlite has the ability to retain moisture -- a must for sandy soil. In addition, each perlite particle contains air passages, which improve aeration and drainage -- a must for clay soil. Perlite is available in different sizes and according to the Perlite Institute, the coarser grades are suitable for gardens and lawns.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn over the soil approximately 10 to 12 inches deep. A rototiller will make this task easier and is usually available for rent at home improvement stores or equipment rental centers. You can also use a garden fork, shovel, spade or hoe. If the soil is too rocky or compact to go 10 to 12 inches deep, go as deep as possible, ideally at least 6 inches.

    • 2

Apply 3 to 6 inches of perlite on top of the soil. Also apply any additional supplements, such as fertilizers, lime or sulfur, as indicated in a soil analysis from a cooperative extension office or soil testing laboratory. You can also add peat moss if the soil lacks rich, organic matter. In this case, add 2 to 3 inches of both perlite and peat moss for a total of 4 to 6 inches of amendments.

Work the perlite and other supplements into the soil as deeply as you turned it over.
