Compost is an important ingredient in organic gardening. Scotts Miracle-Gro uses bark as a source for organic decayed matter. The composted bark provides organic nutrients in the potting soil. Composted bark is an organic way to feed plants without the use of synthetic fertilizers.
Sphagnum is a type of moss found in bogs and it's also referred to as peat. It's an important ingredient in many commercial potting soils, including Miracle-Gro's organic potting soil. Peat is actually not a moss at all, but instead is the acidic, decaying plant matter that is found in bogs and wetlands. Sphagnum moss grows in these nutrient rich peat bogs. The moss is sponge-like and holds water. As it decomposes for use in organic potting soils, it helps keep the soil moist while allowing for excellent drainage. Sphagnum peat moss has the ability to aerate the potting soil while adding nitrogen and raising the acidity level of the potting soil.
Poultry manure is an important ingredient in organic gardening. For this reason, Miracle-Gro Organic Potting Soil uses pasteurized poultry litter as the main source of natural fertilizer in the organic potting soil. Poultry litter is composted to a high temperature to kill any harmful bacteria. Poultry litter adds many micro-nutrients to the potting soil, including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, also known as potash. It also adds magnesium, calcium and sulfur.
Miracle-Gro Organic Potting Soil ingredients includes 0.10 percent total nitrogen. This includes ammoniacal nitrogen, water soluble nitrogen and water insoluble nitrogen. The water insoluble nitrogen is a slow-release form that is derived from the pasteurized poultry litter. There is also 0.05 percent phosphate and 0.05 percent soluble potash which are derived from the pasteurized poultry litter.
