Structural properties significantly impact plant growth and development. Soils that have a high clay content may retain too much water and result in root rot or other diseases. Sandy soils may not provide adequate drainage and cause drought conditions. A loam soil provides ideal drainage conditions for most plants.
Soil pH measures the acidity or alkalinity of your soil. Acid soils have a pH below 7.0. Alkaline soils have a pH over 7.0. Soil pH plays an important role in nutrient availability. Plants in very acidic or alkaline conditions may be exposed to toxic levels of certain nutrients while being deprived of others.
Soils are also distinguished by the amount of organic matter they contain, as well as the bacteria and other biological life that are present in the soil. Adequate amounts of organic matter provide an ideal home for helpful bacteria, insects, nematodes and other microorganisms, which improve soil texture and help prevent disease.
