How to Spread Sand

Sand is used for a variety of landscaping purposes, but most notably for leveling ground. To do this, the sand must be spread out as efficiently as possible. Once the sand has been spread and leveled, you can then place your choice of brick, block or stone on the sand to create an even, leveled walkway or patio.

Instructions

    • 1

Dump the sand in the area in which it will be leveled, either from the truck that delivered it, with a wheelbarrow or from bags, spreading it out over the area as much as possible.

    • 2

Spread the sand out evenly over the area with the shovel if it was delivered by truck or dumped from a wheelbarrow. This means that the sand will be dumped in large piles.

    • 3

Recruit an assistant to hold one end of the 2x6 board while you hold the other. Pass the board over the sand several times to knock the high spots of the sand into the low spots. At the last pass, hold a framing level on the top edge of the board to ensure that the sand substrate is properly level.
