How to Make Nitrogen-Rich Fertilizers

To ensure you have the healthiest soil in your garden, fertilizer may help. There are many different natural fertilizers you can make from regular kitchen scraps or other common substances. Nitrogen-rich soil is important if you want plants and crops to grow well, so using homemade fertilizers that are rich in nitrogen is the ideal choice.

Instructions

    • 1

Collect droppings from your pet rabbits, friends' pet rabbits, or even the local petting zoo. Rabbit droppings have higher nitrogen levels than many other types of animal manure.

    • 2

Add fish emulsion to a seaweed and water mix. If you fill a barrel or trash can with a mixture of seaweed and water, after two months, the result will be a thick, brown liquid that, when diluted, is perfect for the garden. Fish emulsion should be added before dilution to boost nitrogen. Fish emulsion is made by blending fish leftovers with warm water.

    • 3

Dry coffee grounds in the oven. Once dry, the grounds can be sprinkled around the garden or added to the compost heap. Used coffee filters and teabags can also be added to the compost heap. Wet coffee grounds can be added to water to create a liquid fertilizer high in nitrogen. Add half a pound of wet coffee grounds to five gallons of water in a bucket outdoors, and use when required.

    • 4

Mix dried coffee grounds with pieces of egg shell, and place them around any plant being attacked by slugs or snails. Snails will not cross the barrier of egg shells, and the coffee will give the plants a nitrogen boost.
