Obtain a soil sample from at least 3 inches below ground. Collect a level scoop and place it in a sample container filled with distilled water. Secure the lid onto the container. Label the container with the location the sample was taken from. If necessary, collect additional samples from a few other locations in the area.
Shake the sample container for 60 seconds. Allow the soil to settle to the bottom. Depending on the soil, this can take anywhere from 10 minutes to overnight.
Place an N test tube in the test tube holder. Transfer liquid from the sample container into the test tube, using the dropper. Add the N test powder into the test tube. Secure the lid on the test tube. Shake it well, then leave the tube for at least 10 minutes, or until the color changes.
Compare the color to the color chart to determine the soil's nitrogen content.
