How to Build a Soil Layer With Gravel

Gravel is a common addition to soil that can increase the drainage of low-lying areas. Soil that you lay directly on top of a separate gravel layer is called an aquifer or sink, but you can also mix the soil into the gravel directly to build an individual soil level. Using pea gravel will provide adequate drainage without making your soil so rocky that it is difficult to handle during planting season. It will also help minimize soil loss due to erosion as you establish a garden or lawn.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour topsoil into a pile on the part of the yard where you want to build a soil level. Pour pea gravel onto the pile until the pile is one-quarter pea gravel and three-quarters topsoil.

    • 2

Mix the pea gravel and soil with a shovel. Continue mixing until the pea gravel is thoroughly incorporated into the topsoil.

    • 3

Rake out the pile into an even soil layer over the bare yard. The layer should be 6 inches thick across the entire area.
